New riders and motorcycle safety

Motorcycle riders in Rhode Island know that safety is important. Exercising caution when riding can significantly reduce the chances of a motorcycle accident. New riders can derive great benefits from following a few safety tips, and learning good safety habits early can lead to a lifetime of safe riding.

The best way for a new motorcycle rider to stay safe is to buy the right kind of bike. Motorcycles can vary widely in size, shape and power. Smaller or more inexperienced riders might want to choose a bike that is suited to their physical stature. Also, opting for a less powerful bike in the beginning will reduce the chances of losing control while riding.

New riders can also learn some important safety techniques by attending a course offered by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. This group sponsors riding courses throughout the country that cover topics such as safety principles, riding techniques and even emergency maneuvers. The courses are either inexpensive or free and may result in insurance premiums being lowered. Of course, riding safe requires the right equipment. Investing in a motorcycle helmet that is approved by the Department of Transportation is one of the most important purchases new riders can make. Sturdy gloves, boots and an insulated leather jacket can keep riders safe from the elements while providing extra protection in the event of an accident.

It is a fact that motorcycle accidents are more dangerous than other types of vehicle accidents. Motorcycle riders are 30 times more likely to be killed in a crash when compared to other drivers. A personal injury attorney may be able to help a rider injured in a crash by examining police crash reports and witness statements to determine if another person was responsible for the accident.
