Sometimes it is difficult for law enforcement officials to determine how an accident occurred. When that happens, an accident reconstruction team may be sent out to answer the questions that could not be answered at the time of the car crash. This appears to be the case with a recent single-vehicle accident that occurred here in Rhode Island.
Preliminary reports indicate only that a pickup truck occupied by two men slammed into a tree. When emergency crews arrived, they discovered the 31-year-old driver and his 24-year-old passenger trapped inside the vehicle. After they were extricated, the two men were taken to an area hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. At last report, hospital personnel listed both men as being in serious condition.
It could be some time before officials are able to determine the cause of the crash. Once they do make a determination, the driver might end up facing charges in connection with the accident. As the investigation continues, the two men will continue to recover from their injuries.
The longer the men spend in the hospital, the more out-of-pocket medical costs will be incurred. Moreover, if either man requires follow-up medical care or physical therapy, those medical bills will surge even higher. Under Rhode Island law, the passenger in this car crash has the right to file a personal injury claim against the driver in an attempt to recover some of these out-of-pocket costs. Additionally, any time missed from work may result in a loss of wages. Proving negligence on the part of the driver could result in an award of damages that may cover these financial losses.
