What should I research to prepare for a vacation in my RV?

While we are still trudging through the winter months, you may be making your plans for a spring or summer road trip. Of course, any vacation that involves driving long distances requires careful preparation. However, if your intent is to travel by RV, then you have even more issues to consider than if you were going by car.

Once you figure out your points of destination, it is very important to research the laws of the states you will be driving through. Some states have specific licensing requirements for operating RVs, in particular, RVs that are exceptionally large. In such states, the classification of the license you will need would depend on the length and weight of the RV.

In addition, the safety rules applicable to RVs can vary from state to state. Some of these rules apply to driving and others are in regard to the vehicle itself. For example, you may be required to have specific safety equipment on board, such as a breakaway switch, trailer brakes and safety chains.

Since you will want to stop from time to time, it is a good idea to acquaint yourself with the regulations that pertain to parking at rest areas.

Seeing the country by traveling via an RV could provide you and your family with a host of wonderful experiences and memories. Diligent self-education about the rules in effect in the states you're planning to visit can help prevent inadvertent mishaps.

If, while you are on the road, you should be involved in an injury accident, you may need legal assistance to help you get appropriate compensation. As such, a personal injury attorney could represent your interests. The attorney could assess the details of the accident to determine an amount that would constitute a fair settlement and work to get you that amount.
