Traumatic brain injury can have long term effects

For victims of traumatic brain injury in Rhode Island, there is often concern regarding long term effects. While some are able to make a full recovery from their injuries, others face a variety of significant complications, which can include both physical and psychological impairments. In some instances, these consequences can be devastating, especially when they have an impact on cognitive or emotional faculties.

According to the Mayo Clinic, there are a number of potential long term complications that can occur after a serious head injury. Some research has shown that the chance of developing a degenerative disease becomes greater after suffering from brain trauma. A type of dementia often seen in boxers has been attributed to repeated injuries, which can result in diminished movement and confusion. Head injuries have also been linked to an increased risk of Parkinson's or Alzheimer's.

Mental and emotional problems can also persist after the initial injury. Depression or anxiety disorders may occur, as well as trouble regulating emotions. In terms of behavior, marked changes can also be present after a brain injury. A previously risk-averse individual may suddenly act in an impulsive manner, or a person who was once even-tempered can become physically aggressive.

As stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people with the highest risk of developing neurological effects are those who suffer from numerous head injuries spread out over an extended period. To this end, even seemingly mild injuries can cause complications years later.  When it comes to long term effects, comprehensive physical therapy and taking time off from demanding activities can be beneficial to restoring one's health.
