Why Are Car Accidents So Common During the Holidays?

Posted by Robert T. Karns | Dec 08, 2021 | 0 Comments

The holidays are typically regarded as the happiest time of the year. Sadly, however, the holiday season is also marked by a spike in motor vehicle accidents, as crowds of people take to the road to celebrate with their loved ones.

Holiday Car Accident Statistics

Car travel has the highest rate of fatal injury among all modes of major transportation, per the National Safety Council (NSC). This is a serious issue year-round, but even more so during the holidays when roads across the country are met with an influx of travelers. Whether they are heading to a family gathering or to shop for gifts, this influx has been linked to higher rates of accident fatalities time and again.

The NSC has estimated about 340 people may die in traffic accidents on U.S. roads amid the 2021 Christmas holiday period. In addition, the council further estimated about 384 people may lose their lives in U.S. road accidents during the upcoming New Year's holiday.

The heightened danger is not exclusive to Christmas and New Year's. It is best to be vigilant all throughout the holiday season, starting with Hanukkah and ending with Orthodox Christmas.

Common Causes of Car Accidents During the Holidays

Rhode Island's winter months bring a whole host of driving hazards, such as the following:

  • Holiday stress
  • End-of-year burn out
  • Snowy, icy, or wet roads
  • Increased traffic congestion
  • Increased nighttime driving
  • Driving on unfamiliar roads
  • Drunk and impaired driving

When Holidays and Alcohol Mix

Driving under the influence is very common in the winter months, as many holiday gatherings go hand in hand with alcohol consumption.

According to the NSC, 38% of traffic fatalities during the 2019 Christmas holiday period involved at least one driver under the influence of alcohol. Drunk driving rates for the rest of 2019 sat at 28%.

If you plan to drink at a holiday party, make sure to have a designated driver. Don't be the reason someone else doesn't make it home safely.
